Tips That Help You Avoid Fracturing Your Tooth Enamel When You Have Braces

Posted .

When you’re aligning your smile with braces, you want to avoid every complication possible so you can have a convenient orthodontic journey and so you can achieve your perfect smile quickly. This is why our orthodontist, Dr. Scott Vincent, strongly encourages you to take good care of your smile regularly. To help you avoid fracturing your teeth during your orthodontic treatment, he recommends doing the following things:

-Don’t chew on pens, pencils, ice, or your fingernails: Chewing on these things applies an abnormal pressure to the teeth. Most of the time, the teeth can’t handle the pressure and then the tooth enamel fractures. The crack might be small at first, but it can get bigger as time goes on.

-Use fluoride: Fluoride is a mineral that is found in toothpaste, mouthwash, tap water, and natural resources. It’s best to expose your teeth to this mineral because it strengthens the hard outer shell of the teeth. The stronger your teeth are, the higher chance you have of preventing tooth cracks.

-Wear a mouthguard: A mouthguard is a handy appliance that protects your teeth when hard objects hit the mouth. So, if you participate in high-contact sports or activities, please wear this appliance while doing so. That way you can avoid tooth fractures.
